The Ugep Massacre of 1975: A Christmas Eve Ugep Would Never Forget
On 24 December 1975, Ugep was plunged into one of the darkest chapters of its history. A military reprisal left homes burnt, families displaced and many lives lost, with survivors carrying the memories of that night for generations. From the tragedy itself to the area still known as Army Barracks at Ntamkpo, the story remains an important part of Ugep’s history—one that must be documented, remembered and preserved.

IN MEMORY OF THE UGEP WOMEN OF 1989: THE TRAGIC DEATHS OF UGEP. HEROIC WOMEN:
In 1989, more than twenty Ugep women reportedly lost their lives in a tragic motor accident while travelling together from Lagos to Ugep to celebrate the commissioning of a mortuary they had built in their hometown. According to an account by Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, what should have been a joyful milestone became one of the most heartbreaking chapters in Ugep’s history. Today, the mortuary serves Ugep and parts of Yakurr, while the story of these women remains a poignant reminder of the human lives behind our community’s history. Discover Ugep remembers their lives and invites community members to share their names, photographs and recollections to help preserve their legacy for generations to come.
